IVF Retreats

Fertility Support will be hosting a one-day retreat to help women better understand the emotional impact of IVF and how to manage their wellbeing accordingly. The event, which will take place in 2024, in London, will include presentations by experts in fertility and supporting fields such as psychotherapy, nutrition, yoga and acupuncture.

IVF is A Complex and Emotionally Challenging Process

Women undergoing IVF face a range of psychological challenges that can impact their mental health and wellbeing. A recent study, which surveyed 1,300 fertility patients in the UK found that 90% of respondents feel depressed. Another study published in the Journal of Human Reproduction found that women undergoing IVF had higher levels of anxiety and depression than women who were not undergoing a fertility treatment, This study also showed that women’s distress increased as they underwent more treatment cycles. Further, women going through IVF can feel stigmatized and isolated. They report feeling that others are judging them, that they are failing as women, and that they have to keep their treatment a secret.

Limited or No Support

Given the psychological challenges associated with IVF, it is essential that women undergoing this treatment receive mental support. But this support is often not available to them: UK fertility clinics only have to provide one free session of fertility counselling, which is far from ideal.

Unfortunately, there is still some social stigma attached to seeking mental health services, which may prevent some women from seeking help. Additionally, some women may want to believe that psychotherapy is not necessary for their mental health or that they can cope on their own.
