Standing Beside
Supporting Someone You Love Through Fertility Treatment
Workshop Description:
A fertility journey is one of the most demanding life experiences an individual or a couple can face. For parents, siblings, and friends, the experience can also feel daunting because there is no clear roadmap for how to offer help. What should you say? How can you stand close without overstepping? And how do you manage your own emotions when someone you love is in pain?
Helping is not straightforward. It is easy to slip into “fixing” mode, to try to cheer someone up, or to step back out of fear of saying the wrong thing. Yet the wrong kind of help, however well-intentioned, can leave someone feeling more isolated at a time when they are most vulnerable. At times it may even put strain on the very relationships your loved ones most need.
This workshop will be led by Alejandra Lozada Andrade, a UKCP-accredited integrative psychotherapist with extensive experience supporting clients through infertility, fertility treatments, pregnancy loss, high-risk pregnancies, endometriosis, PCOS, and other reproductive health challenges. She is a trustee of the British Fertility Society and is frequently invited to contribute to podcasts, retreats, and professional events on fertility and mental health. Alejandra is committed to raising awareness in this field and advancing research into the connections between fertility, gynaecology, and mental health.
Alejandra is currently undertaking a doctorate in psychotherapy, exploring the complex relationship between hormonal changes and emotional experience during fertility treatment, with a particular focus on how these shifts are understood and worked with in psychotherapy.
Objectives:
This workshop is designed to help you support your loved one through their fertility treatment. Together, we will:
Explore the psychological impact of infertility including grief, shame, envy, isolation, and loss of identity
Talk openly about why supporting someone in this space feels so difficult and how to manage those challenges
Cultivate calmness in the moment to offer a model of steadiness and presence
Develop communication skills to find words that comfort when someone is struggling
By the end of the workshop, you will have a deeper understanding of what your loved one may be going through, along with practical ways of being present. The aim is not to discover the perfect words, but to cultivate a stance that offers steadiness, respect, and genuine care.
